The Choose Joy Project

Anniversaries. There are fun ones and there are difficult ones. This coming July 23rd will be one of the most difficult ones I have had to face. That's the one year anniversary of my husbands passing.

I've thought many times of how I will get through that day. While it would be easy to do, I don't want to stay in bed and cry all day. I also don't want to "celebrate" that day because for so many of us it is a somber occasion. I've decided the best way is to do what I always seek to do, honor my husbands life and tell my husbands story.

A girlfriend of mine came to me with an idea about doing random acts of kindness in honor of Joel. When she mentioned it I knew I had found my answer, as I had been having the same thought. That will be how I spend the one year anniversary of such a hard day.

I would like to invite each of you to join with me in what we are calling the Choose Joy project.

What is the Choose Joy project? It is spending a small part of your day this July 23rd doing 2 random acts of kindness for others, in Joel's memory. It can be buying someone a meal. It can be leaving someone a kind note of encouragement. It can be filling up someone's car with gas. It can be paying for someone's groceries. It can be mowing someone's lawn. Anything, from big to small, that translates as a kind gesture is what we are going for.

As you do so we would like for you to give the person a small card. The card will direct them to this website and to the video which tells the story of our family. We are hopeful that in doing this we are not only treating others with kindness, but we are spreading the message of joy and hope in difficult life circumstances. Because really, you never know who might need more of that!

So how do you get involved? The first step is to shoot us an email with your address information:

Your information is confidential and will be used for this project and this project only. We will be gathering address' from now until the end of June. We will then mail out 2 cards to each household. Once you get your card in the mail, we would love to hear back from you, with any details you would want to give, about what act of kindness you did on July 23rd. If you are up for it we would also love a picture of you with your card! We will be posting all the pictures we receive under the Choose Joy tab of this website, where all the details are currently listed.

The more people we can get to be a part, the more of an impact we will have on that day. I can think of no better way to honor the life of one who was loved by so many. Would you consider being a part of the Choose Joy project today?
