ICU Day-3

Before I start today's update there's something I want to urge you to do. When Joel had his first surgery to remove his kidney due to cancer, in 2010, we filled out something called an advance directive. An advance directive is basically you putting into writing what your wishes are and how you want your family to care for you should you not be able to make those decisions for yourself. I cannot tell you how many people have told me recently that they do not have an advance directive. Most people my age do not want to have such a heavy conversations with their spouse-but let me tell you-it's crucial to do so. Joel and I had some intense conversations about what his wishes and what my wishes were. We wrote them down, we made them known. I cannot tell you how heavy the burden has been on me to make some of the decisions that I have had to make on behalf of my husband. The only thing that makes it somewhat easier is that I know his wishes. I know he told me to fight for him. So that is what helps me to look those doctors in the eyes and dispute what they say "the patients wishes might be." Oh no, I know exactly what the patients wishes are thank you very much. So I would greatly encourage you to set aside some time to have those difficult discussions because one day you might be really thankful that you did. You can even go online to download a free form and keep it on file with your hospital as we have done. To take it a step further you might also want to look into doing a will (especially if custody of small children is potentially in play) as well as a power of attorney that grants you the ability to make all legal and financial decisions on your spouses behalf. I really cannot emphasize enough the importance of all of these things. Today is day 3 in the ICU and there has really been no change and everything is stable. It might sound odd to say but that is exactly how we want things to remain. We want the swelling to keep going down, we want his vitals to stay stable and his breathing strong. We want nothing major to pop up and for things to stay stable-which they are now. He will remain on the vent for at least the next few days to give his body a break and just allow him to rest. So that is where we are at this point.

This stay in the hospital we have had some of the same nurses and all of the same doctors. So they have developed a rapport with me and I with them. Yesterday the doctor was giving me some facts about Joel's current status and I listened. Then when he was done I said "ok some come on doctor. You work in the ICU, I am sure you have seen a miracle or two around here." He started to shake his head as he told me a recent story about a guy who came in and was pronounced dead on arrival. His family said no way, we refuse to accept that report. "He's now a couple doors down from you alive and chatting with his family this very moment." Wow! Come on!! Talk about getting me fired up. They refused to believe the report and he is alive today.

Romans 4:19-21-NIV 19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.

Unwavering. Love that word. We as a family have an unwavering, radical belief that God is going to do radical things on my husbands behalf. Right now we are just waiting for the moment to arrive-but a glorious one it will be! Thank you so much for your continuous unwavering prayers friends.
