ICU-Day 12

Hi friends. Things are moving forward slowly but surely. Thank you for your prayers. I have kind of felt like I am hitting a wall lately with strength but not hope (earnest expectation). This hypothermia part of the journey has been difficult and much longer than we had anticipated. I will be so thankful when it's over. Here are some ways that you can pray for us. There are a couple of big things. #1-Blood clots. He has developed one in his leg and a few in his arms. This is totally normal for someone who's been laying in bed for as long as he has. Unfortunately because of his history this can be a really serious thing. Really the only way they can treat this is to put him back on blood thinners but blood thinners is what put him here again in the first place. There's risks with any path that we choose to take and that's what makes the decisions so hard. And it's definitely hard to be the only one making them. Please be praying that his blood clots just go away. That's what we need for them to just go away.

#2-We need prayers over this trachea and feeding tube situation. We do not want Joel to have to undergo anymore invasive procedures no matter how big or small they may be. We are up against a bit of a deadline in that they will have to move forward with these procedures next week if they cannot get him off the vent. Which brings me to our last prayer point.

#3-We need for Joel's brain swelling to go down at least another centimeter. We need this CT scan on Saturday to show that the swelling has gone down so much that they can take him off of hypothermia treatment, start unsedating him and in turn get him off the vent. Once off the vent he has to be able to swallow properly (this ability can be affected by the stroke) in order to not have to get the feeding tube. So that will be a big thing.

As I was driving into the hospital I passed by the entrance where 6 weeks ago Joel casually walked in to have a fairly straight forward surgery on his lung. When I drove past I just started to pray to God Joel walked into the hospital and by your miraculous power he can walk out of here. At the beginning of this second stroke we were basically told a nursing home might be in our future and the "very best" we should hope for is that he is well enough to go back to rehab. I disagree. I think that the "very best" that we hope for, stand on and believe for is that Joel comes out of this stroke fully restore and whole to the amazement of every medical personnel involved in his case. It's not too big for God. Nothing is.
